MarchFourth Marching Band in downtown Portland

MarchFourth Marching Band gave a free concert in downtown Portland yesterday. They warmed up in Unico Plaza (SW 6th & Oak), where they played for half an hour and then marched south on 6th Avenue, picking people up along the way. The faces of all of the office workers who stood by gawking at the spectacle were absolutely priceless. Once they got to Unitus Plaza (SW 6th & Jefferson), they played another raucous half hour for all who had joined at that point. If you haven’t heard, or rather seen, MarchFourth in action, you really need to, because their performance is next to impossible to describe. OK, maybe the most fitting description is just a marching band on crack. Take the best of the high school band geeks, dress them up in the most outlandish, slightly steampunkish, outfits you can find, or rather make, and mix with a heavy helping of circus sideshow – Stilts! Dancing Ladies! Fire Breathers?!. That description still won’t capture the brilliance of the show but I’ve embedded a clip of one of their songs below to try to get you in the right frame of mind to view my photos. Unfortunately, they’re about to head east on an extended tour – the “Magnificent Beast” tour – but be sure to catch them whenever you next get the chance.  They’re not to be missed!
