Portland Short Track MTB Racing – 2011-7-25

Portland is a bike town, there are no shortage of races, but I’ve really looked forward to checking out the Short Track Mountain Bike Races that they hold Monday nights during the Summer at Portland International Speedway. Half of the course they hold on the dirt motocross track with sections added through the grass and trees on either side. It makes for a great spectator sport because the riders make several laps and there really aren’t many lulls between them once the racers spread out. The only thing missing for spectators is the beer that accompanies its closest racing relative, cyclocross, which is ironic because the lead sponsor of the series is Hopworks Urban Brewery. Then again, maybe there aren’t many spectators because, without the rain, cold and muck of cyclocross, this one looks fun enough that nobody wants to just sit on the sidelines.
